i'm takin a ride with my best friend...

you have no idea how excited i was to see this in person. kehinde wiley, one of my favorite contemporary artists just released this photo book, BLACK LIGHT.
wiley has been on my radar for quite some time, when i first peeped his stuff in an old issue of art forum. i had the most excellent opportunity to see some of his works in person at the Rhona Hoffman gallery in Chicago. these are epic portraits of young, urban african american men fused in ornate decoration, reminiscent of traditional portraiture of renaissance art. life sized portraits, these paintings of young men, in the latest of street fashions- suggest their position of power in today's popular culture. quite brilliant, if you fuckin ask me!

in the garage

wow, i can't help thinking that this look from rick owens spring 2010 men's wear reminds me a shit ton of jay & silent bob.

which i completely love!

but then rick had to throw this shit in. this reminds me of a guy that judy jetson would probably lose her virginity to.

huh, huh?! everyone....so happy together, na na na na...how is the weather..nananana...
it also draws a lot of similarities to,
everyone's favorite boy band----
n'sync

don't get me wrong...love me some rick owens, but lets do more jay & silent bob and less styles for boy bands. we need not repeat the mistakes of the 90s.

speaking of the 90s & mallrats, out of my mind pops, weezer. man, holy hell, i loved the blue album. its still one of my favorite albums because every single song is completely right on.
at the end of mallrats, weezer did a song for the movie called suzanne- that freaking song was rad- and lord knows that if i knew a chick who had that name and i was going to try to impress her, that would be the first song on my mix.
anyway, i tried to find a good version on youtube, but couldn't. instead, i am putting up what i think is the best song on weezer's blue album. the final track, they jam hard in this 8 incher, i mean, minuter...so enjoy this track. its live..but dig out your old blue album & revisit. its seriously gold.

cinnamon girl

i'm locking myself in my room and planning to spend the next 8 hours drawing my heart out. i have another meeting tomorrow. i am hoping to solidify some of this mess that i have all around me and begin the process of working on completed illustrations. i've been listening to neil young on repeat. i know a lot of heads who pay him no respect...but i swear to god, i will change their feeble minds some .day. soon.
past
three
days,
have been scattered sleep. resulting in 2 hour sleep patterns-so i'm foggy, i'm jaded, i'm back to my own private hell that is graduate school. but i love what i do. i really fucking love what i do.
in other world BREAKING news, i am in the process of compiling a mix tape for some one really special. i met her last year at school & she's moving to california. sweet, sweet, sunny----- california, for a little taste of grad school herself. (silly wabbit) but for real-ski/ski/ski--- i am so happy and i want this mix to be good to her on the long road ahead, let it take her places the road can not. what's made the cut, you ask?
ramones. tom petty. small faces. depeche mode. iggy pop. & a little band that calls themselves: golden earring.
yah, i typically don't like to fuck around when it comes to mix tapes. its going to rock. i'm filling in the missing pieces...and if you can think of something, why not share it with me???
some of the things i'm considering are...cities-like ones she'll pass through. driving or cars. new york (because thats a special place to her) california, particularly L.A. and perhaps even just whats ahead.... metaphor or not.
but in the meantime of all of this excitement, i got my neil young on-
hand cramps & all.
sweet.
don't touch me!!!! :)
& a present for you!
i could be happy, for the rest of my, this way, too.
xo.

i confess

1981- the year of the rooster - out popped this baby.

this is the second release from the english beat and an album that gets heavy rotation via my technics dc servo turntable. this band boasts a collection of influential musicians from ska, soul, pop, reggae and punk variations. (must be what makes them so f'in great!)
It's a wonder to me why this band never got so big in the usa or why more people don't own this album- maybe its because they only ever came out with three albums? but all i know is that it shouldn't be that way.
if you haven't checked out this band and/or this album, i suggest you get on that. be prepared for the perfect blend of horns and vocals you've ever heard. i can't say enough good things about this album, in that case, any of their albums. a perfect companion to a night at home with friends or your sunday soundtrack folding socks.

every little thing she does is magic

back in my zombie town. less than impressed.
moved into a new pad and been sorting through my digs. realized, i repeatedly wear the same two pairs of jeans. (my ksubi squawks & some cheapies from uniqlo)
but since i am on a shopping hold till i pay off this BAD MOTHER -mustard yellow-distressed-leather -jacket i grabbed
while in chicago at a shop called untitled

major sale, kids, don't fret, there will be no jeans for me over 60 bones for a little bit. (this jacket is super sick. i will try to post some pics of me wearing it bc i doubt my dress form does it justice.)

the distressed quality is wonderful and it evokes a super vintage 70s appeal. not to mention is a great departure from all the black leather motos & bombers that every shop keeps diarrhea-ing out.)
so, considering those opti-roonies i've come up with this:

1.

look at those details...not bad.
these smokers run me a cool $36.72 at alloy.com ( hahahahahhaa to the 10. cos i know thats a site where teen girls shop, but i am really diggin these bad boys.) they have this motorcross thing goin on, which i can appreciate. they are supposed to be black, but look a little faded, nothin that a little rit bath in black won't solve though. for 36 bucks, can i really go wrong?

2.

or then these come my way via tripp nyc. they got that whole tye dye thing going strong, available in a healthy range of color combos, but i certainly think these are sharp. $55

here's another color variation of the tripp's. this one is also a good option.

and here is a total killer track i've had on heavy rotation. cos' i like you guys so much, i thought i'd share.
